Sun Chips now comes in a new, 100% compostable bag that completely disintegrates in approximately 14 weeks. Sun Chips are not only better for you than regular chips, but they are better for the environment. There’s only one downside to this new bag technology, it’s TOO FREAKING LOUD!

15 Thoughts on “Potato Chip Technology That Destroys Your Hearing

  1. Yesterday I contacted Frito Lays to invite them to view my videoblog and they responded back to me. Thank you Frito Lays for taking the time to watch my video and for your response. Doing right by the environment is not easy and perhaps the one he makes the most noise will ultimately make the biggest impact!

    “Hi J. Scot
Thank you for contacting Frito-Lay about our new SunChips package. We appreciate you writing about it on your blog site!

We are breaking new ground with packaging made from renewable plant-based materials. The really exciting news is that in April, 2010 we plan to introduce the first fully compostable chip bag of its kind. It's designed to fully decompose in about 14 weeks when placed in a hot, active compost bin or pile.

Yes, it is noisier than our current packaging. We like to think of the noise as “making a step in the right direction for the environment.” You eat the chips, the earth eats the bag and we all live in a cleaner world. For more information about the compostable package and our healthier planet initiatives, please visit http://www.sunchips.com.

Your comments are important and please know they will be shared with our packaging and marketing teams. We consider you a valued consumer and hope you will continue to enjoy snacks from Frito-Lay.”

  2. Just curious, what is the sound like from an un-opened package of tostito's? I think having a deflated and clipped package is giving an unfair comparison.

  3. I actually did have someone else ask me that same question. I did try it with an unopened bag of chips and found it was only 1-3 decibels louder….not enough to disguise the overwhelming sound coming out of Sun Chips. I guess if you want to make positive changes in the environment, you gotta be loud! Not such a bad thing.

  5. You also hold the sun chips bag closer to the decibel reader and you crunch it significantly harder…. very scientific

  7. Assuming you did this for a full, 8-hour workday, yes the noise level could be damaging. However, I’m inclined to think
that anoyone ripping open Sun Chips all day long is likely to have broader health issues than noise-induced hearing loss :). Still, interesting to see- I knew the bag was noisy, but wouldn’t have guessed that loud!

  8. OMG! Ponies! — CLEARLY the blog is a work of pure humor … something you don't seem to have. Lighten up …

They’re not potato chips! I think they’re wheat based.

  11. Me either….it was a fun little experiment. Not really scientific, but there is a clear difference in the sound.

  12. The other day I was sitting in airplane cabin, buckled up and ready for take-off. The flight attendants on the PA advised us that all cellphones and hand held devices were to be turned off, and that SunChips were not be to eaten during take-off and landing!

That is awesome…I’m glad most people have a sense of humor about this bag. I really wish they would bring it back and market the fact that it’s loud! They are sitting on a Gold Mine and don’t realize it. Sometimes the irrational approach is best.
