Your iPad 2 On An HD-Flat

I did it folks! I upgraded from an iPad 1 to an iPad 2. I can’t believe it took me this long, but supplies have been somewhat limited. I actually got very lucky by popping into the Apple Store at Pentagon City one Saturday morning. The line was short, the inventory was large, and I walked out with a 64GB, WiFi/3G (AT&T) Pad of joy!

I won’t bore you will all the changes to the iPad 2…you can read about them on the web and many of you who follow this blog already know the basic differences. Personally, I love the new form factor. It is extremely comfortable to hold for long periods of time and the Smart Case rocks. Additionally, the speed and graphics capability is insane. I also feel the display is a bit better despite it being the same resolution as the original. However, the camera is not so good. You really need a lot of light to take great photos, but I didn’t really buy it for the rear camera. The front camera, however, is important to me these days since I keep up with my friends and family via FaceTime and Skype.

One of the best features is iPad 2′s ability to display Video Mirroring. What is Video Mirroring? Well, it is literally just that! Whatever is on your 9.7″ iPad 2 screen can now be displayed on your HD Flat! You can share presentations with Keynote, output Netflix movies or play your favorite video games bigger than Dallas. So, what is needed to harness this capability? You need an iPad 2 and a Digital A/V Adapter.

Apple sells a Digital A/V Adapter ($29.99) that plugs into the 30-pin connection at the bottom of the iPad 2. The other end features an HDMI plug and another 30-pin connector, giving you the ability to output audio & video and charge your iPad 2 simultaneously. Once plugged in, Apple’s no non-sense peripheral kicks in and starts working. No extra settings, no needed adjustments, no guessing of resolutions for your HDTV…IT JUST WORKS! It will work with an iPad 1, but you won’t get any video, just audio. I tested this out with my original iPad. Check out the video at the bottom as our Chief Engineer, Joshua, explains this new feature!

The only downside I see with this is that I’m still connected to a cable. And if you want to do some serious presentations, you’ll need a long HDMI cable. Despite this tethered feel, Keynote and PowerPoint briefings looked beautiful on my HDTV. Maybe down the road this feature will spill over into the AppleTV 2, giving us the ability to go wireless with our iPad content, but for now, I am more than thrilled to have this level of functionality and so is my son!

Straight from Apple’s website, “Video mirroring doesn’t just turn your iPad into a big screen. It actually turns the big screen into your iPad. With the Digital AV Adapter (sold separately), it works instantly. Everyone sees what’s on your display — even when you rotate iPad from portrait to landscape or zoom in and out on photos. Video mirroring is engineered into iOS so it’s always smooth and slick. Just like your presentation.”

Looking for a Blu-Ray Player? Check out the Sony BDP-N460

Sony BDP-N460Call me crazy and bias, but I do own more than one Blu-Ray player. My most recent acquisition is easily the best, standalone player in this household. Even if you are new to the world of Blu-Ray and players, you gotta check out this beauty. The Sony BDP-N460 is hands down, the best Blu-Ray player on the market right now. What makes this device so great? It’s so much more than just a Blu-Ray player. From the moment I tore this device out of my UPS driver’s hands initial power-up, I knew I had one incredible piece of electronics on my hands.

Besides playing Blu-Ray discs, DVDs, AVCHD encoded discs, photo discs…etc (the box displays too many formats to list here), once hooked up to the internet, the Sony BDP-N460 opens up an entire world of streaming media to its owner. Right out of the box, I noticed it had a USB connection on the front, which gives you the ability to show photos, listen to music, and watch movies via a thumbdrive or external harddrive. Exploring the back panel, I noticed several connections for a wide variety of setups, to include another USB port to house the memory stick required for BD-Live content. It does not have wireless built-in, but you can connect a wireless access point (by purchasing an additional device) to connect to the player in order to stream via a wireless network. I use an Apple AirPort Express to connect the device to my network. It was as easy as plugging in an Ethernet cable into the back of the Sony and into the Apple AirPort Express. No setup required! It even pulled down the latest firmware update, which is a necessity for nearly every player these days.

Let’s talk about the streaming content for a second. You can certainly connect to the big players out there: NetFlix, Amazon-on-Demand and YouTube, but there are many other sites you’ll have access as well. I can watch the most popular video podcasts on the web, play music videos, listen to music and get tips from the “How-To” channel. You could spend days watching the video content accessible through the beautiful, easy to use, award-winning graphical interface.

If you just want this player to play movies, this player will certainly not disappoint. Movies look incredible! The player has a quick-start mode, allowing immediate playback in only a few seconds. As far as background noise from the on-board fan, I could not even hear it running. For the money…and I mean very little (<$200)…this is perhaps the best Blu-Ray player I’ve come across.

Which Pocket Video Camera is better? Kodak Zi8 vs Flip UltraHD

kodak-zi8-pocket-hd-camcorderThis is a question I’ve been asking myself and now a friend of mine is asking. Now is the time to share some thoughts, so I posted a great link on the differences between the two. Personally, I added the Kodak Zi8 to my wishlist and here’s my short list of reasons why:

1. True 1080p recording

2. 5 Mega-pixel still photos (Flip does not take still photos)

3. HDMI port to show videos on my HDTV

4. Facebook and YouTube upload management included

5. Larger LCD screen on the back and image stabilization

Hands down, the Kodak Zi8 is a much better camera for the money! Download this article by Hiawatha Bray from Boston.com (PDF Link –>) Pocket Camera Comparison
